Kathmandu, September 25
Medical education activist and veteran orthopaedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC has ended his ongoing fast-unto-death by signing a 10-point agreement with the government on Saturday evening
It was Dr KC’s 20th indefinite hunger strike, with almost identical demands, since 2012. Every time, he has ended the strike by signing an agreement with the government but has been forced to relaunch the protest after the government fails to implement them.
After he signed the 10-point deal with Ganesh Pandey, a secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Dr KC sipped juice from the hands of Sarita Chaudhary, a patient at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, to end his fasting on Saturday late evening.
As the government has expressed its commitment to table the agreement in the next cabinet meeting for endorsement and application, Dr KC says he will stage another round of protest soon if the deal is not heeded.
Dr Govinda KC had started the fast-unto-death in Dhangadhi of Kailali 13 days ago. After his health deteriorated, he was airlifted to Kathmandu for further treatment.
