4.7 magnitude earthquake hits Manang

Kathmandu, December 19

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 struck Manang early this morning, with its epicenter located near Nesyang.

According to the Earthquake Measurement and Research Center, the tremor was recorded at 7:37 am. No reports of damage or casualties have surfaced so far.

Recent earthquake Activity in Bajhang

Earlier this week, Bajhang experienced three tremors over two consecutive days. On Wednesday at 3 pm, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded with its epicenter in Dhamena.

On Tuesday, two earthquakes were reported in Bajhang. The first occurred at 1:02 pm with a magnitude of 3.9 near Rayal, and the second at 5:08 pm, measuring 4.3, again centered in Dhamena.

Nepal’s high seismic risk

Nepal is considered highly vulnerable to earthquakes due to its geological makeup. The accumulation of tectonic energy in the western region of Nepal has raised concerns among experts about the possibility of larger quakes in the future.

Experts emphasise the need for earthquake-resistant infrastructure and enhanced disaster preparedness to minimise potential losses. However, they also view smaller tremors as a positive sign, as these can release accumulated seismic energy and reduce the risk of a major earthquake.

Notable earthquakes in Nepal’s history

Nepal has witnessed several devastating earthquakes in recent years. On November 3, 2023, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Jajarkot claimed over 150 lives.

Similarly, the catastrophic earthquake of April 25, 2015, with a magnitude of 7.6, centered in Barpak, Gorkha, resulted in nearly 9,000 fatalities.

With its high seismic vulnerability, experts continue to urge vigilance and preparedness to mitigate the impact of future earthquakes.
