A 26-year-old jailbird has died in Morang District Prison, Biratnagar, on Wednesday. The deceased’s family has claimed Nirajan Yadav died because of torture inflicted by police.

Yadav, who was convicted of a drug abuse case, was taken to Koshi Hospital at around 4:30 pm yesterday. The hospital’s medical superintendent Dr Chuman Lal Das says he had already died before arriving at the hospital.

“We have seen injuries on his head and feet,” the deceased’s brother Balmithun Yadav says, “Therefore, torture is the cause of the death.” Balmithun further claims his brother was normal until three days ago and he had met him to hand over some money.

SP Santosh Khadka of the District Police Office says the postmortem report has been awaited to determine if he died of torture. He assures action against police personnel if they were found involved in any foul play. Jailer Subas Kumar Lamichhane also echoes Khadka.
