Province 1 lawmaker convicted of forgery

File: Gulephun Miya

Biratnagar, January 27

Province 1 Assembly member Gulephun Miya has been convicted of forging the government seal and signature. The Biratnagar High Court handed down a sentence of one year and Rs 14,583 fine on her.

Earlier in May 2017, the Morang District Court had convicted Miya, her husband Shekh Shilbar, and government employees Bijay Kamat and Deep Chand Mandal of forging the signature of the secretary of the then Kadamaha Village Development Committee. But dissatisfied with the verdict, Miya had filed an appeal to the high court.

The court acquitted Miya’s husband but endorsed her conviction.

Officials of the Assembly Secretariat say Miya, a leader of the ruling Nepal Communist Party, will lose her lawmaker’s position. She was elected to the position on behalf of the then CPN-UML as a proportional representative candidate.
