Woman dies by self-immolation in Kageshwori; suicide note found urging husband and sons to live happily

Kathmandu, December 15

A 38-year-old woman from Kageshwori Manohara Municipality-8, near Kirat Chowk, self-immolated by dousing herself in petrol near the Bagmati River. Police recovered a suicide note at the scene in which she expressed her wish for her husband and sons to live happily.

The incident occurred at around 12 pm on Saturday. The woman, identified as Kamala Acharya, originally from Ratnanagar Municipality-12, Chitwan, and a resident of Narayantar, Boudha, reportedly poured petrol over herself and set herself on fire.

No blame assigned in suicide note

DSP Birendra Goddar of the New Baneshwor Police Circle confirmed the discovery of the note, which did not hold anyone accountable for the act. “The suicide note clearly mentions that she does not blame anyone for her decision,” said DSP Goddar in a statement to Onlinekhabar.

In her note, Acharya stated that she had caused suffering to her husband and children, leading to her decision. “I have brought pain to my husband and sons. I don’t want to hurt anyone. Please live happily,” read a portion of the note, according to an investigating officer.

Acharya had written the note on paper and left it near the site, including a message requesting that her husband be informed of the incident, along with his contact number.

Final moments before the incident

Chat records reveal that Acharya was in conversation with her husband until 11:12 am, just before she carried out the act at noon. Reports suggest she did not hold her husband responsible in any way.

Acharya had two sons, aged 13 and 3. According to family members, she had been reserved and preferred solitude in recent months.

She arrived at the Bagmati riverbank on a scooter (Ba 35 Pa 5818) and set herself on fire in an open field nearby. Severely injured by the flames, she was rushed to Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital in Sankhu for treatment but succumbed to her injuries at 5:45 am on Sunday.

Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
