Pranaya Shakya and Kaleidoscope Production honoured with Freedom Filmmaker Recognition 2024

Kathmandu, December 12

The Freedom Filmmaker Recognition 2024 has been awarded to filmmaker Pranaya Shakya and his firm, Kaleidoscope Production, Nepal’s only LGBTQIA+ led visual media production company. The award was presented during the closing ceremony of the Queer Film Festival Kathmandu (QFK) on December 9.

Established by Docskool in 2018, the Freedom Filmmaker Recognition honours individuals and collectives who make significant contributions to promoting diverse cinema practices in Nepal and South Asia. The award’s mascot, a figure shouting in agony, symbolises filmmakers’ unwavering commitment to free expression despite challenges imposed by state and non-state actors.

The Queer Film Festival Kathmandu, Nepal’s first queer-focused film festival, ran from December 6 to 9 across multiple venues, including Yalamaya Kendra, Docskool, and satellite locations like Pink Tiffany, Roxy, Smog Restaurant, and Hard Rock CafĂ© Kathmandu as per a press statement released by Docskool. The festival featured 51 films—spanning short fiction, documentaries, and features—centered on queer identities and attracted over 2,000 visitors. The closing ceremony also included the screening of Fadia’s Tree.

Organised by Docskool, an open network supporting filmmakers since 2008, QFK and the Freedom Filmmaker Recognition highlight the organisation’s commitment to fostering alternative support mechanisms for filmmakers at early stages of their careers.
