The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has stated that there will be less rainfall in the coming three years.

Earlier, the department stated that there would be above-average rainfall across the country from October 1 to December 31. However, they have now forecasted below-average rainfall from December 1 to February 28. Similarly, they have also stated that the maximum and minimum temperature will be above average from  October 1 to February 28.

The unpredictable weather

In the earlier report, which was published on October 6, it was mentioned that there will be rainfall above average in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati,  South-East Gandaki, and the Eastern side of Lumbini Province from October 1 to December 31.

Likewise, it was mentioned that both the maximum and minimum temperatures would be above average. While the department’s temperature forecast was accurate, their prediction regarding rainfall proved incorrect, as most days after October 1 have remained dry.

However the Spokesperson of the department, Bibhuti Pokharel says that since December is still left, it may rain. “Due to the impact of the west wind, it is still raining in the west,” says Pokharel. “Let’s wait for December to end.”

Last year, the department’s forecast was incorrect. They had predicted above-average rainfall across the country; however, it did not materialize. But the forecast regarding temperature was correct.

Spokesperson of the department Pokharel says that unlike in monsoon it is difficult to forecast during winter. “As this is just an assumption, sometimes it can be wrong,” she says. “In comparison to yesteryears, the predictions made by the department are correct these days.”

Winter will be warm

On December 8, DHM made public that there will be rainfall below average from November 28 to February 28, and the maximum and minimum temperature will be above average.

“There is a possibility that the rainfall during the winter will be below average,” states the department.

According to the department, there is a 55 percent to 65 percent chance of having rainfall below average in the southern part of Koshi province and the eastern part of Madhesh province. Similarly, there is a 45 to 55 percent chance of rainfall less than average in the southern parts of Far West and Karnali Provinces, most parts of Lumbini Province, eastern and southern parts of Gandaki Province, Bagmati Province, western parts of Madhesh Province and western parts of Koshi Province.

According to the department, there is a 35 to 45 percent likelihood of below-average rainfall in the remaining area.

The maximum and minimum temperature will be above average. It means that there will be warmth from December 1 to February 28.

Spokesperson of the department Bibhuti Pokharel informed that there is a 55 to 65 percent chance that the maximum temperature will be above average in the central and eastern parts of Karnali province, the eastern part of Lumbini province, Gandaki province, the western part of Bagmati province and the western part of Madhesh province.

There is a 45 to 55 percent chance that the maximum temperature will be above average in the south-west and southern parts of Karnali province, the western part of Lumbini province, the northeastern part of Bagmati province, the northern and southeastern parts of Koshi province.

In the rest of the country, there is a 35 to 45 percent chance that the maximum temperature will be higher than average.

According to the Pokharel, there is a 55 to 65 percent chance that the minimum temperature will be above average in most parts of Bagmati province and the western part of Madhesh province.

Similarly, there is a 45 to 55 percent chance that most parts of Karnali province,  Lumbini province, southern and western parts of Gandaki province, eastern part of Madhesh province and southern part of Koshi province will experience a minimum temperature above average.

The department has estimated that there is a 35 to 45 percent probability that the minimum temperature will be higher than average throughout the country.
