Kathmandu hosts its first Queer Film Festival

Kathmandu, December 6

Kathmandu’s inaugural Queer Film Festival began today at Yalamaya Kendra, Patan, and will run until December 9, showcasing 51 feature films, documentaries, and short projects, including animations. The festival explores themes of sexuality, identity, and bodily autonomy, celebrating diverse LGBTQIA+ narratives.

Organised by Docskool, a collective dedicated to cinema education and cultural promotion, the event is part of the Women in Cinema initiative, which provides grants and mentorship to women and queer filmmakers as per a press statement released by Docskool.

The festival opened with Fawzia Mirza’s Queen of My Dreams, a Canadian film about a Pakistani immigrant navigating her sexuality, family history, and cultural identity. Other notable entries include S/he is still Her/E, a documentary on transformative queer artist Genesis P-Orridge, which was previously screened at Tribeca and Sheffield festivals. Films like If I Die, It Will Be of Joy, delving into older women’s exploration of sexuality, and Warsha, a Sundance award-winning short from Lebanon, also feature prominently. Many of the films are premiering in South Asia, presented in 17 thematic packages.

Screenings are free but require prior registration via docskool.wordpress.com or WhatsApp at +9779818966569.

The festival serves as a groundbreaking platform for Nepal’s cinematic and queer communities, promoting dialogue and understanding through compelling storytelling.
