Kathmandu, August 4

In a thrilling encounter at the CAVA Women’s Nations League, Nepal’s women’s volleyball team secured a historic victory over India on Saturday. The match, held at the covered hall of Dasharath Stadium in Tripureshwar, saw Nepal triumph with a 3-2 set win, marking a significant achievement in the country’s sporting history.

Nepal clinched the victory with set scores of 25-18, 12-25, 25-17, 18-25, and 15-13. The home team started strong, leveraging the support of a vibrant home crowd to take an early lead of 12-6 in the first set. Despite a spirited comeback from India, reducing the lead to 11-13, Nepal maintained their momentum and comfortably won the first set 25-18.

The second set saw Nepal and India tied at 6-6 initially, but India pulled ahead, winning the set 25-12 after Nepal received a red card for a substitution error. This allowed India to gain the final point uncontested.

Nepal rebounded in the third set, establishing a dominant 16-9 lead and eventually winning the set 25-17, bringing them closer to victory. However, India fought back in the fourth set, taking an early lead and maintaining it to win the set 25-18, pushing the match to a decisive fifth set.

The final set was a nail-biter, with Nepal taking an early 5-2 lead thanks to impressive spikes from Usha Bhandari and Saraswati Chaudhary. The teams switched courts with Nepal leading 8-5. Despite India’s efforts to close the gap, Nepal held their nerve, and with a crucial point from Saraswati, secured the historic win with a 15-13 score in the final set.

This victory is a significant milestone for Nepali women’s volleyball, especially considering the previous best performance against India was a narrow 3-2 loss in the 2019 South Asian Games (SAG) finals at Dasharath Stadium.

The CAVA Women’s Nations League features teams from Nepal, India, Iran, Maldives, and Sri Lanka, with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals. In earlier matches, Nepal defeated Sri Lanka 3-0, while India secured wins against Iran (3-1) and Maldives (3-0).
