Naag Panchami: Traditional rituals at Naagdaha, Bhaktapur (Photos)

Kathmandu, August 9

The annual Naag Panchami festival observed on the fifth day of the waxing moon in the month of Shrawan, is being celebrated today with traditional rituals of snake worship across the Kathmandu Valley.

Devotees have gathered in large numbers at sacred sites like Naagdaha in Bhaktapur and Nagpokhari and Taudaha in Kathmandu to perform the customary rituals. During the festival, worshippers offer flowers, rice grains, and milk to images and idols of snakes. It is also a tradition to affix snake images to the main entrance of homes, a practice believed to protect against harm from snakes, scorpions, and other creatures, as well as to safeguard against fire, storms, and lightning.

The Naag Panchami festival is steeped in religious significance, and devotees continue to honour these traditions with great reverence, with crowds thronging the holy sites from early morning. Here are the photographs of rituals done at Naagdaha, Bhaktapur.
