Hyundai has been successful in Nepal in all areas, especially the compact SUV area. Recently, it launched its new compact SUV, the Hyundai Exter in Nepal. The compact SUV, which won the Indian Car of the Year 2024, was seen first during the NADA Auto Show 2023.
With the compact SUV market seemingly increasing in Nepal, the competition has increased quite a bit with a range of options from different car brands. The car competes with other cars in the same segment like the Nissan Magnite, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Tata Punch, Citroen C3 and the Tata Tiago in Nepal.
With some of the first-in-segment features, the Hyundai Exter has already got a lot of appreciation in the Nepali market. The car is available in three variants which differ in features and few specs.

Design
Exterior
The Hyundai Exter has a unique modern design with a parametric design front grille and wide front skid plate. The striking and signature feature is the H-shaped LED DRLs which look similar to the 2024 Hyundai Santa FE.
The Santa FE is a full-fledged SUV with modern features and comfort. The projector bi-function headlamps are situated just below the DRLs. With a unique front end, the Exter has attracted many people.
Front the side, it has striking lines and sports doors. The wheel design differs according to the variant. The EX variant has 14-inch steel wheels, the S variant has a full-wheel cover whereas the SX variant has dual-tone styled diamond cut alloy wheels. The roof extends to the back with a sporty spoiler. The dual-tone black colour options available make the car look very sporty and elegant. It also has black roof rails.
Coming to the rear, the Hyundai Exter has dynamic unique styling. The signature H-shaped LED taillamps give a unique look contemplating the front. The indicators are halogen which are situated just below the taillamp. The rear skid plate is silver in colour and also carries a sporty look.
Interior
Coming to the interior, the Hyundai Exter has a spacious interior with a focus on space and comfort. The sporty black interiors are available in three colour styles; Light Sage, Cosmic Blue, or Silver. The front has a modern and simple design on the front dash.
The steering wheel is round and comfortable with buttons for modes, volume call, ok and cancel. Just in front is the digital instrument cluster which has a simple and modern UI which displays information such as speed, rpm, tyre pressure, fuel, range, time and trip meter.
The Hyundai Exter has an 8-inch infotainment system which is modern and simple easy-to-use UI. It has support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The higher trim options also have voice recognition and Home to Car with Alexa. The infotainment system displays information for navigation, music, audio, calls and car information.
The Hyundai Exter has foot lighting which enhances the interior look. Coming to the centre console, the AC vents are black-coloured and are situated just below the infotainment system. The climate control buttons and knobs are situated just below the AC vents. There is one USB-C and one USB-A with a wireless charging pad to charge up devices and smartphones. The gearbox differs according to the transmission either manual or automatic.
The seats on the Hyundai Exter are comfortable. The front seats are slightly sporty with a bucket seat-type design. The rear seats can carry three passengers and are comfortable with enough headroom and legroom. The seats have options for either fabric or fabric and leather. The rear passengers also have AC vents which can be operated from the front.
The Hyundai Exter even though being a compact SUV has a sunroof which is smart electric. The boot space is decent with space for about 391 litres.
Performance
The Hyundai EXTER is powered by a 1.2-litre Kappa Dual VTVT petrol engine with a 4-cylinder setup with an engine capacity of 1197 cc. It offers a maximum power output of 61 kW at 6000 rpm and a peak torque of 113.8 Nm at 4000 rpm. With the BS6 emission standard, this car ensures cleaner and more environmentally friendly driving. It has a top speed of 150 kmph providing a balanced mix of power and efficiency. Its transmission options include a 5-speed manual gearbox or a Smart Auto AMT coupled with a front-wheel-drive (FWD) system.
The suspension system of the Hyundai EXTER includes a McPherson strut at the front and a coupled torsion beam axle at the rear. The braking setup consists of disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear with ABS and EBD. Depending on the variant, the car comes with different tyre options, including 165/70 R14 steel or full wheel cover, and 175/65 R15 dual-tone styled steel wheels.
Safety and Features
The Hyundai Exter prioritizes safety with a range of advanced features. It includes airbags for both the driver and passenger, as well as side and curtain airbags in the event of a collision. It is equipped with a dashcam featuring dual cameras and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
The Exter comes with essential safety technologies such as ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), hill start assist control (HAC), and vehicle stability management (VSM), ensuring stability and control in all conditions.
