A joint team of Nepal Police and Traffic Police on Thursday seized 1,000 kilograms of sugar from Kavrebhanjyang of Dhulikhel municipality-9.

Police recovered the sugar supplied by hiding in 33 sacks during a security check.

Security forces have suspected an increase in sugar smuggling from various districts in the eastern Tarai region via the BP Highway in recent days. This comes as the Kathmandu valley faces a shortage of sugar during the festive season.

The Information Officer of the District Police Office, Raj Kumar Shrestha, confirmed that sugar is being illegally imported via the BP Highway.

To curb the illegal supply of sugar, the police have heightened security checks on the highway. On October 19, the Area Police Office in Banepa seized 92 sacks of sugar that had been brought in to evade taxes. The sugar was concealed within sacks filled with paddy.
