Human rights activists have determined that the death of two prisoners in Sankhuwasabha District Jail in Khandbari was due to police brutality.

Binod Tolangi, 19, of Madi municipality-5 in Sankhuwasabha, and Aakash Balami, 28, of Kakani rural municipality-7 in Nuwakot died on August 11 during treatment.

Following their site visit, the activists said that the individuals were taken to the hospital only in the morning after their death, which had occurred as a result of severe beatings.

Police say the two trying to escape the prison. They had broken through the toilet’s window and had fled but could not cross the wall surrounding the prison. The activists say they were then arrested and beaten.

“It looks like they were beaten outside after and handed over to the prison administration,” said Somraj Thapa of INSEC Koshi.

Activists feel the two were beaten with an iron rod and stick. The rod had even pocked one of the deceased, said an activist who had visited the prison.

“The marks are clear on the person’s body,” he said.

The monitoring team say the prison administration also beat the two.
