Motorola, a beloved brand during the ’90s and 2000s, brought about a remarkable revolution in the mobile phone industry. Even today, Motorola remains well-known for its flip phones, which propelled them to incredible heights.
One of its most iconic phones, the Motorola Razr, was originally launched in 2003. Its futuristic and stylish design set it apart from all other devices. In 2019, Motorola reintroduced the Razr as a smartphone, maintaining its distinctive flip form. Subsequently, Motorola continued the series in 2020 and 2022, using the same name. Now, in 2023, it has unveiled the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, garnering the attention of numerous smartphone enthusiasts.

Design and display
The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has an improved design and an enhanced external screen from last year’s Motorola Razr 2022, which is thinner and lighter too. The weight depends on the variant of the colour. The viva magenta colour option weighs 184.5 grams whereas the infinite black and glacier blue colour option weighs 188.5 grams.
The body of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra features Corning Gorilla Glass Victus on both the front and rear surfaces of the infinite black and glacier blue option and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and vegan leather on the rear of the Viva magenta option. The frame is made of 7000 series aluminium.
The hinge has also been refined with a new teardrop design folding flat leaving no gap. The hinge is sturdy and can stay open at different angles allowing you to do various things such as do video calls, a tripod for both rear and front cameras or make a cam coder to record videos.
On the back, the Razr 40 Ultra has a 3.6-inch external display, setting it apart from typical flip phones. Unlike smaller external screens that primarily show time, widgets and notifications or serve as a viewfinder for selfie photos and videos, its display offers much more.
It allows users to access and utilise almost all the apps available on the main screen, enabling activities such as scrolling through social media, watching YouTube videos, playing games, making calls, sending messages, and much more. This feature provides a significant advantage, particularly for those seeking a compact-sized flip phone.
On the back, along with the 3.6-inch external screen, there is a set of two dual cameras and a flash that looks like two eyes peeking through the screen.
On the front of the Razr 40 Ultra, the main display has a 6.9″ FHD+ pOLED screen with a resolution of 2640 x 1080 at 413ppi. It utilises LTPO and Foldable AMOLED technologies, supporting HDR10+ with a wide colour gamut of 120 per cent DCI-P3. The main display offers a refresh rate of up to 165Hz, while the touch rate reaches 240Hz/360Hz in game mode. It has a peak brightness of 1400 nits.
The external display, measuring 3.6″ with a resolution of 1066 x 1056, matches the main display’s 413ppi and AMOLED technology. It supports HDR10+ and a 100 per cent DCI-P3 colour gamut, with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz and a touch rate of 120Hz/360Hz in game mode. The external display achieves a peak brightness of 1100 nits.
Performance and storage
The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 mobile platform. Its octa-core CPU comprises a 3.19 GHz Cortex-X2 core, three 2.75 GHz Cortex-A710 cores for balanced tasks, and four power-efficient 1.80 GHz Cortex-A510 cores.
The graphics are handled by Adreno 730 GPU, which along with the chipset delivers nice performance. The software is stock Andriod 13 with a few Motorola customisation with a clean user experience.
It has two RAM options of 8GB and 12 GB. The 8GB has one storage option of 256GB whereas the 12GB has two storage options of 256GB and 512 GB.
Camera
The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has a dual camera setup in the back, which includes a 12MP main camera and a 13MP ultra-wide camera. The back camera can also be used as a selfie camera using the external screen as a viewfinder helping you click more detailed selfies and videos.

The Razr 40 Ultra on the front has a 32MP selfie camera which is good enough for selfies and videos. Since the hinge is sturdy enough, users can take photos and videos by using it as a tripod too. It includes features such as burst shot, gesture selfie, auto smile capture, selfie animation, spot colour, active photo, dual capture, live filter, face beauty, portrait mode beauty, HDR, auto night vision, portrait night vision, and photo booth.
It can record 4k videos at 60/30fps and 1080p videos at 60/30fps. It also has features for video recording such as spot colour, dual capture, hyperlapse, face beauty for videos and portrait video.

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has a battery that supports 30W wired charging. It also offers the convenience of 5W wireless charging, giving users flexibility in charging options. It features three microphones for improved audio capture and clarity.
In terms of connectivity, it supports Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6 and Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless connectivity with other devices.
