Kathmandu, March 22

Nepalis working abroad can be a part of Nepal’s social security system from now onwards, announces the government.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal launched the new system amid a function organised in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

With the launch of the system, Nepalis on foreign employment and self-employment abroad can participate in the contribution-based social security programme, informs the Social Security Fund.

The fund’s director Roshan Koju says interested Nepalis working abroad need to pay Rs 2,200 every month to participate in the scheme. But, if they make payments for more than seven months at once, they can get a 10 per cent discount.

Payments can be made via mobile wallets including Khalti and eSewa and Connect IPS.

A call centre has been established where interested people can call and ask for information. There are WhatsApp and Viber groups also for the sharing of information.

So far, 399,566 people have participated in the scheme.
