As in the case of the doctor’s licence test, more than half of the applicants have failed the engineer’s licence test conducted by the regulatory body.

Nepal Engineering Council says only 565 of the 1,981 candidates passed the test, which is just 28.5 per cent of the total. It means 71.5 per cent of aspiring engineers failed the test.

An engineer’s licence test was held for the first time in the country this year. Previously, all bachelor graduates would be allowed to work as engineers. But after several questions concerning their qualification were raised against them, the council began conducting an additional language test.

Over 50 engineering colleges across Nepal produce around 8,000 graduates every year.

Nepal Engineering Council says it has licensed around 77,000 engineers based on their academic certificates in the previous years since its establishment in the late 1990s.
