Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is now officially launched and is expected to come to Nepal soon.

Samsung released its next-gen foldable smartphones in its latest Galaxy Unpacked event. The event also saw the launch of another foldable phone, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro and its smartwatch, Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is the successor of last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 3, and the company has not brought any major changes to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 this year. But, when you go into the details, you will figure out that Samsung has done a lot of work to make the phone better than it was last year. Samsung has majorly focused on design refinements this time instead of innovation and changes on the phone. The phone also comes with better camera performance, better battery life, faster charging and a faster chipset.

Let’s get into the details of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

Design and display

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has similar styling and looks like Galaxy Z Flip 3 from last year. Samsung has made several adjustments to the existing design to make it better instead of innovating and presenting a new one. The phone comes with a plastic front, glass back and an aluminium frame build. The camera panel and an extra display on the phone have an identical design to its predecessor. The difference this time is that the phone gets a glossy frame finish and matte glass design instead of a matte frame and glossy glass panel. The glossy panel also gets flatter this time. For protection, the phone also has a tougher Victus+ panel.

The foldable feature of the phone is what makes it unique. Though the mechanism remains the same this year too, the phone gets a stronger hinge and frame this time. It is marketed that the hinges should last at least 200,000 cycles. Also, the hinges have no fixed position and can be adjusted at any position the user likes. The phone also has IPX8 water-resistant rating. The X-rating on the phone indicates that it has no dust protection. The fingerprint sensor lies on the side of the phone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 weighs around 187 grams and is only 6.9mm thick. The thickness increases to 15.9mm when the phone is folded. It is available in bora purple, graphite, pink gold, blue, yellow, white, navy, khaki and red colour options.

On the front is a 6.7-inch foldable dynamic AMOLED 2X display. The display offers a refresh rate as high as 120Hz and can achieve a brightness of up to 1,200 nits. With a resolution of 1,080*2,640 pixels and 426 PPI density, the display also has an HDR10+ feature which allows for a more dynamic view of the media. When folded, the back panel has another 1.9-inch Super AMOLED display residing just next to the dual camera. The second display can be used for replying to messages, taking calls, or even adding widgets to the cover screen. It can also be used as a selfie viewfinder.

Cameras

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a dual camera setup on the back and a single selfie camera on the front. These are the same cameras that were on Flip 3. The back houses a 12MP primary with another 12MP ultrawide camera, while on the front is a 10MP selfie shooter. The primary camera has features like dual-pixel PDAF and OIS which makes the photos and videos sharp and stable while the ultrawide camera has a FOV of 123 degrees.

Though its predecessor had the same features, Samsung has made an upgrade on the primary camera of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. It now has a large sensor and comes with a different lens. The larger sensor allows for more light to pass through the lens, which then results in better pictures in low light, captures a greater dynamic range of tones, and also allows more background blur.

This flagship Samsung phone barely disappoints when it comes to camera performance. All the cameras of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 can capture up to 4K resolution videos. However, only the primary camera is capable of capturing videos at higher frame rates. It is also the only camera lens to have OIS for stabilisation. The HDR10+ feature should also provide better contrast and colours even on the dark parts.

Performance and storage

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 runs on One UI 4.1.1 based on Android 12. The phone is said to receive four years of major OS updates and up to five years of security updates. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is equipped with the best chipset from Qualcomm to date. The phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 (4nm) chipset and the graphical duties are handled by Adreno 730. This is a huge improvement in terms of performance compared to the previous generation.

The phone is available in a single RAM option with three internal storage options. With 8GB RAM as a standard, the phone is coupled up with either 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of internal storage. There is no option of expanding the storage on the phone.

Battery life, connectivity and others

Another improvement on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is its battery life and charging system. The phone sees a 12% improvement in battery life and now has a 3,700mAh non-removable li-po battery. With a much-improved chipset, the battery on the phone should provide enough power for the users to go through a day or two under normal use. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 also gets faster charging this time. The phone gets a 25W fast charging and a faster 15W wireless charging system. The phone can also be used as a reverse charger as it supports 4.5W reverse wireless charging.

For connectivity, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 supports dual sims with up to 5G network connectivity. The phone also has the support for dual-band wifi and wifi 6. Furthermore, the phone also supports GPS and NFC. The Bluetooth 5.2 on the phone can be used for wireless pairing with other devices while USB Type-C 2.0 can be used for charging and wired pairing. The phone has stereo speakers for audio, but there is no 3.5mm headphone jack.

Notable features of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 are:

  • Lightweight and durable build
  • Tougher panels, stronger hinges and frame
  • IPX8 water resistant certification
  • Foldable dynamic AMOLED 2X display
  • 120HZ refresh rate
  • 1,200 nits brightness
  • Secondary 1.9-inch Super AMOLED display
  • Android 12, One UI 4.1.1
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+Gen 1 chipset
  • Improvement in low-light photography
  • 4K video recording

  • Stereo speakers
  • Wifi-6
  • 25W fast charging and 15W fast wireless charging

Though some teasers have been released by the official Facebook and Instagram page of Samsung Nepal, the phone may only arrive here if the ban on the import of smartphones over USD 300 is withdrawn. The base variant, 8/128GB is priced at INR 89,999. If the price remains the same in Nepal as well, one can expect a starting price range from Rs 145,000 when the phone is released here.
