CAAN commissioning experts’ team to study the need for new international airports

Kathmandu, July 18

The government is preparing to commission an experts’ team to study the need for new international airports in the country. The team will also be responsible to suggest where such airports should be constructed.

The country’s civil aviation authority, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, says the team is being established owning to the verdict of the Supreme Court that cancelled the ongoing plan for the Nijgadh international airport.

The authority’s Director-General Pradeep Adhikari says the authority is forwarding a proposal in this regard to the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation for approval.

Speaking in a meeting of the House of Representatives’ International Relationships Committee on Monday, Adhikari said the government would move ahead with the next airport construction plans as per the suggestions of the same committee.

The Supreme Court in its landmark verdict had told the government to form such a committee so that it could ensure the minimum harm to the environment while carrying out such projects.
