Kathmandu airport: 3 cleaning staff among 5 arrested for attempted gold smuggling

Kathmandu, April 29

Security officials at the Kathmandu airport say they have arrested three cleaning staff among five for their alleged involvement in an attempt of gold smuggling.

Police also recovered 2 kg and 350 grams of gold hidden inside the lavatory of a Himalaya Airlines aircraft that was about to take off the Tribhuvan International Airport recently.

This is the first case of an organised effort of gold smuggling since the notorious 33.5 kg smuggling case in 2018.

The Kathmandu airport security office chief, SSP Bhim Prasad Dhakal, says the three staffers were outsourced by Himalaya Airlines from another company.

They were arrested during a routine security check on the aircraft.
