Kathmandu, November 29
The government of Nepal has barred South African nationals from entering the country citing fears of the spread of a new coronavirus variant, Omicron.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a circular on Sunday to the Department of Immigration, the Tribhuvan International Airport and concerned local offices at the border areas to stop South Africans from entering the country, according to the ministry’s spokesperson Phanindra Mani Pokharel.
“A decision has been made to bar South African nationals except for diplomats, officials and those coming for emergency tasks. It will remain in effect until the next notice,” Pokharel says.
With the new Omicron variant emerging first in South Africa and later in a few other countries, governments across the world have adopted high alert against the infection.
