The government has estimated that the population of Nepal has reached 28 to 30 million. The government revealed the new estimate on Friday as it concluded the decennial census on Thursday.
Most of the married couples have two or fewer children as they told census enumerators, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics.
The bureau’s chief Nebin Lal Shrestha says the 2011 census had estimated a woman in her reproductive age would give birth to 2.1 children on an average, but the recent census found the figure would be two or lower than that.
The rate, however, is more than average in Province 2, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces and lower in Bagmati.
The bureau says the detailed preliminary data will come out within three months whereas the final results will be published within the next two years.
