Bibeksheel Sajha splitting with Mishra faction adopting anti-federalism document officially

The Bibeksheel Sajha Party is highly likely to split within a few days as the party’s central committee, dominated by the Rabindra Mishra side, endorsed a controversial document proposed by him by a two-thirds majority.

Sharad Raj Pathak, the party spokesperson, says the committee meeting held on Thursday adopted the document officially.

In July, Mishra had proposed abolishing federalism and holding a referendum on secularism to change the course of the country’s politics. That proposal had sparked a new debate in the country.

A few days after that, the dissident faction led by the party’s coordinator Milan Pandey had floated another document against Mishra’s, arguing the anti-federalism proposal was regressive.

But, the party’s meeting today endorsed the document. It also decided that the party chairperson Mishra will have major executive powers in the party affairs.

Before this, both Mishra and Pandey had enjoyed equal rights.

Pandey has reacted to the decision saying it was a party split.

Nonetheless, he says the meeting today was illegitimate, and he will challenge the decision at the Election Commission.

The Bibeksheel Sajha Party was formed out of the merger between the then Bibeksheel Nepali and Sajha Party in the run-up to the 2017 parliamentary elections. However, they had split in early January 2019 to re-merge again in December 2020.

However, the party is preparing to split with two factions calling different meetings.
