Samsung Galaxy F42 5G: Time will tell how well it will fare in Nepal

Samsung Galaxy F42 5G is the latest release among mid-range smartphones by Samsung.

There has already been a lot of releases in the mid-range category by Samsung this year. In the F series itself, not long ago, Samsung released Galaxy F22. Other notable releases from Samsung were Galaxy M62, Galaxy A52, Galaxy A72, Galaxy A22 and Galaxy M32. Along with S21 Ultra, the company also launched Samsung Galaxy Fold 3 and Galaxy Flip 3 this year.

The release of different smartphones throughout the year makes one be certain that Samsung really is expanding its galaxy. The release of different smartphones by Samsung also indicates it is making its presence felt in every category possible. In particular, the release of Galaxy F42 means another option and competitor in the mid-range category.

Reviewing the features of the Samsung Galaxy F42 5G, it has something that other phones in a similar price range lack but also lacks many things that other phones have. Hence, one can forecast that the phone might sell well in Nepal, yet the competition will be tough with similar phones in a similar price range.

Design and display

Samsung Galaxy F42 has a glass front, plastic back and a plastic frame. Like most of the smartphones in this category, Galaxy F42 too has a waterdrop notch display. The phone is 6.60-inch tall, which pretty much is a decent size for all smartphones these days. It has a thickness of 9mm, which is normal for this price range as well.

The fingerprint sensor is on the side of the phone and it has a face recognition feature as well, which the company claims is quite fast.

There is a 6.58-inch FHD+ display on the phone with a maximum resolution of 1080*2408 pixels. For a faster and smoother scrolling experience, the phone has a 90Hz refresh rate display.

Until three years ago, even the flagship smartphones would not have a 90Hz refresh rate display. This shows how quickly the company is moving and also how stiff the competition is.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy F42 has a triple camera setup on its back. The main 64MP camera is housed together with 5MP ultrawide and 2MP bokeh lenses. The major highlight of the camera on this phone is, with the night mode on, you can capture some good and detailed photos even at low lights. The ultrawide camera also provides you with a 115 FOV for capturing landscapes.

The front-facing is an 8MP camera. Both front and back cameras can record videos in 1080@ 30fps.

The phone has a 5000mAh non-removable Li-Po battery and has a 15W fast charging system. This can be great for gaming, watching movies or for your online classes and seminars.

Storage and connectivity

Samsung Galaxy F42 has two memory options. You can choose between the 6GB or 8GB RAM option whereas the internal storage remains 128GB on both variants. The memory can be further expanded to 1TB through a microSDXC card.

The phone supports a 5G network and gets a further connection from Wi-Fi 802.11, dual-band, Bluetooth 5.0 and USB Type-C 2.0. The phone also has a 3.5mm headphone jack which is found in every mid-range smartphone.

The price of the Samsung Galaxy F42 is Rs 34,999 for the 6/128GB variant and Rs 38,999 for the 8/128GB variant.

Verdict

Samsung Galaxy F42 competes with the likes of Mi 11 Lite, Poco X3 Pro, Vivo Y53s, Oppo F19 Pro and even Samsung’s own Galaxy A22 and M32. The mid-range war is going strong in the market as people have too many options to choose from. But, one distinct advantage Galaxy F42 holds is it supports a 5G network, which other phone lacks. But, then again, 5G is a long way to go here in Nepal. So, is it really an advantage?

The display is almost the same for all smartphones in this price category. While most of the smartphones in this category are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, the Galaxy F42 only has a Gorilla Glass 3. Though there is a 64MP camera on the phone, it, unfortunately, cannot record videos in 4K resolution and the users have to limit themselves to 1080p only.

Similarly, Samsung has been mixing up the chipsets on their smartphones. This one gets a Mediatek Dimensity 700 5G chipset, which is a fast mid-range SoC with an integrated 5G modem. With the Antutu benchmark score this chipset has received, it is expected to provide a good performance and should be able to handle multitasking with ease. Since there is a lot of competition in this segment, only time will tell how were Galaxy F42 will fare in the Nepali market.
