Govt issues citizenship ordinance to spark another controversy

Kathmandu, May 23

The KP Sharma Oli government has issued an ordinance to amend the Citizenship Act that is likely to further widen the political division in the party and spark another controversy among the citizenships.

In the ordinance, the government has apparently tried to address concerns raised by the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal to wood the party to his side.

Reportedly, the ordinance has a provision that children of citizens by birth will get citizenship by descent. Currently, the children of citizens by birth get citizenship by birth only, not citizenship by descent.

The constitution has it that only the citizens by descent can get high state offices such as the president, vice-president, prime minister, chief justice, speaker of the House of Representatives, chief of state (governor), chief minister, speaker of a provincial assembly and chief of a security body.

The House of Representatives was discussing a bill to amend the Citizenship Act for the past two years. However, the bill was not endorsed due to several disputes among the parties.
