Kathmandu, May 14
National Assembly by-election candidate in the Bagmati province Khim Lal Devkota says he is not preparing to withdraw his candidacy.
As the Election Commission is holding the by-election in the province to elect one member’s position vacated by Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa’s removal from the CPN-Maoist Centre, Devkota is contesting as an independent candidate. However, he had received the support of the Madhav Kumar Nepal camp of the ruling CPN-UML and the opposition parties such as the Nepali Congress and CPN-Maoist Centre.
To bar the UML’s official candidate, Thapa, who is contesting again, the rival faction in the ruling party had partnered with the opposition parties and fielded Devkota.
Therefore, with the Nepal faction preparing to forge a deal with the UML leadership of KP Sharma Oli, voters of the faction are likely to vote for Thapa, not Devkota, and he is likely to lose. Provincial Assembly members and chiefs and deputies of local governments cast their votes in the Upper House elections.
But, in a statement, Devkota on Friday said he could not rethink the candidature as other parties including the Congress, Maoist Centre, and Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal have also supported him.
The election will be held on May 20.
