Decks cleared for adjustment of Nepal Police to federal structure

Kathmandu, September 28

With President Bidya Devi Bhandari issuing an ordinance to amend the act on the operation of Nepal Police and provincial police forces, the government has been allowed to move forward the adjustment of Nepal Police to the federal structure.

Though it has been five years since the promulgation of the federal constitution, the police organisation has not adopted the new structure owing to various disputes.

One of the disputes was about who would control the police in the capital, but federal and provincial governments have recently agreed that the federal government would govern the police force in Kathmandu valley though provincial governments are responsible for overall security across the country.

Accordingly, existing police bodies in the capital, operating as metropolitan police, will be renamed as federal capital police.

The adjustment process will begin after the cabinet approves a model for it.
