The central bank has directed all banks operating branches in the Kathmandu valley not to attract crowds so as not to increase the risk of coronavirus infection.

Whereas the district administration offices have imposed a prohibitory order in three districts of the valley to be in effect until Wednesday midnight, the banks have opened only limited branches. Consequently, the opened branches have attracted big crowds.

Dev Kumar Dhakal, the executive director of Nepal Rastra Bank’s Banks and Financial Institution Regulation Department, says the banks have been told to open a few more branches to avoid crowds. However, the banks still cannot open all the branches, according to him.

Dhakal also says the bank customers have not been used to banking technologies that they could use from their own home instead of visiting the banks.
