Butwal, June 25
Nepalgunj sub-metropolitan city in Banke has demanded that it is named as the provincial capital of Province 5, further warning efforts will be made to annex Banke and Bardiya districts into the Karnali Province if that is not possible.
In its annual policy and programme for the next fiscal year 2020/21 during the municipal council meeting on Wednesday, the city government says it will expedite efforts to ensure the capital status for the city in the next year.
Mayor Dhawal Shamsher Rana claims the Karnali government has also accepted Banke and Bardiya as a part of the province.
The leadership’s demand comes at a time when the Provincial Assembly is already divided regarding the new provincial capital. Some lawmakers want the current temporary capital, Butwal, to be retained as the permanent capital whereas some want it to shift to Dang, the home district of Chief Minister Shankar Pokhrel.
