Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has assured that the government would not let the anti-corruption constitutional body, Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, investigate into transactions of the private sector.
Oli’s statement comes amid proposals to revise the CIAA Act allowing it to investigate the wrongdoings of private individuals and companies whenever the government wanted, which many fear would make the government autocratic.
Addressing the annual general meeting of the Confederation of Nepalese Industries via video-conferencing in Kathmandu on Monday, Oli said the government was not making preparations to let the CIAA go into the private sector.
“I am clearly aware of the disagreements about the bill to amend the CIAA Act,” Oli said, “The government would not move forward the bill in a way to let the commission look into the private sector.”
Earlier, the industrialists had led a delegation to the prime minister urging for the withdrawal of the bill.
Meanwhile, amid growing concerns, the National Assembly did not discuss the bill today though it was scheduled earlier.
