Govt not to table constitution amendment bill in House today

Kathmandu, May 27

The government has decided not to table the constitution amendment bill in the House of Representatives meeting on Wednesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, the bill was listed on the tentative agenda for the meeting scheduled this afternoon. However, the Federal Parliament Secretariat removed the item from the final agenda published a few minutes before the meeting.

It has been learned that the government decided not to table the bill now as the opposition parties did not openly give their consent to discuss the bill and endorse it through a fast-track procedure.

During the all-party meeting called by the prime minister yesterday, the main opposition party, Nepali Congress, asked for more time as it would discuss the issue in its central working committee. Likewise, the newly unified People’s Socialist Party Nepal stressed its demand is also included in the bill.

Earlier last week, the government had registered the bill in order to revise the map included in the country’s coat of arms that a schedule of the constitution describes.
