Kathmandu, March 26
Five prominent persons of the Nepali society on Thursday urged the government to announce special packages for the needy who are struggling hard for their hand-to-mouth existence during the lockdown imposed to control the coronavirus infection.
Former chief justices Kalyan Shrestha and Sushila Karki, educationist Kedar Bhakta Mathema, journalist-turned-politician Rabindra Mishra and civil society leader Durga Subedi issued a joint statement today and said, “We express a strong demand that the government should immediately announce special packages for those earning less who depend on their daily wages for the survival of themselves and their families.”
They suggested that such packages may include free foodstuffs, paid leave, school fee waivers for their children and free treatment. Local governments can be mobilised to implement such packages, according to them.
“The serious concern expressed by the government of late and the initiatives taken for the control of coronavirus infection deserve a welcome,” they maintained.
