Kathmandu, February 26
The ruling Nepal Communist Party has decided to nominate the party’s vice-chairman Bamdev Gautam for the vacant position of a National Assembly member.
Gautam will succeed incumbent Finance Minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada in the National Assembly.
The term of the 19 National Assembly members is expiring next Tuesday. Eighteen of them will be replaced by the members elected in the January 23 elections whereas one will be appointed by the president in the Cabinet’s recommendation. The party wants the government to nominate Gautam as the president’s appointee.
A meeting of the party secretariat held on Wednesday made the decision.
The decision follows the party’s failure to prepare a constitution amendment proposal to let a National Assembly member become the prime minister. It has been reported that Gautam had put pressure on the party leadership to amend the constitution so that he could become the PM if any favourable situation arises. However, the bid is almost certain to fail, owing to protests from inside the party.
The party’s secretariat also decided to dissolve the task force formed to prepare the amendment proposal.
