Purbanchal University’s VC office padlocked for past five months

Biratnagar, December 24

The vice-chancellor’s office at Purbanchal University in Morang has remained padlocked for the past five months and the opening of the office is nowhere near.

Different student unions had padlocked the office around five months ago. The then VC Ghanashyam Lal Das has already retired. The government decided to appoint the Faculty of Management Dean Biju Kumar Thapaliya as the acting VC for three months. Thapaliya recently completed his term, but he never got a chance to enter the office.

“My job was difficult due to the padlocking,” he says, “We tried to hold talks [with the protesting student unions], but could not.”

Meanwhile, student leaders have been seen divided over their demands and ways to end the stalemate. Whereas the union aligned to the ruling Nepal Communist Party has blamed the Nepali Congress-aligned student union for the crisis, the opposition wing says it will not budge unless the university implements an agreement signed with it in the past.
