Kathmandu, December 30

Foreign minister Pradeep Gyawali says the controversial Millennium Challenge Corporation agreement his government signed with the United States will be ratified by Parliament.

Gyawali’s statement comes as various leaders of the ruling Nepal Communist Party object to the agreement saying that it is part of the US Indo-Pacific strategy. The government has told dissident leaders that it will seek further clarification for the US and the NCP’s secretariat will decide on the issue.

“We have made our stance on MCC clear. It will be ratified,” added minister Gyawali.

Under the compact, the MCC will provide $500 million in grant while the government will chip in $130 million for the implementation of the Electricity Transmission Project (ETP) and Road Maintenance Project (RMP).  The funds will be used to develop the Hetauda-Damauli-Butwal 400kVA transmission line and rehabilitate 305km of highways from Itahari-Kakarvitta and Pokhara-Butwal.
