Onion price touches Rs 250 per kilo in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, November 26

The price of a kilo of onion in Kathmandu has jumped by Rs 48 in the last week as India banned exports amid rising prices in the region.

Last week, the price of a kilo of onion was quoted at Rs 152 per kilo. However, on Tuesday, the price was quoted at Rs 200 per kg at the Kalimati vegetable market and as much as Rs 250 in the retail market.

Kalimati management committee’s deputy director Binay Shrestha said this was the highest price quoted by the market in recent times. He said that Nepal does not produce enough onions to meet the domestic demand and it has to be imported.

The committee said that the price of onion has been increasing at the rate of Rs 10 per day. While there is a market demand for 80-90 tonnes of onion in the market, only 10 tonnes is being imported
