Police arrest scammers who stole Rs 1.9 million using fake cheques

Police have arrested six men for allegedly withdrawing Rs 1.9 million from an account holder at Janata Bank using a forged signature. Police say that they are also investigating if any bank officials were involved in the case.

Police arrested the six men after receiving a complaint from Gopal Man Rajbahak, the account holder.

Rajbahak on Sunday received a call from the scammers who pretended to be bank staffers. The caller asked Rajbahak to switch off his phone for an hour. When he switched on his phone, Rs 1.9 million had already been withdrawn from his account.

Three of the suspects were arrested from the New Road branch of Janata Bank. The trio was caught withdrawing money using forged signatures. The trio after investigation then gave names of the other three people who were also arrested. The suspects have been identified as Subhash Shrestha, Kumar Tamang, Manish Ghimire, Anjan Baral, Suman Paudel, and Govinda Ghimire.

Police also said they confiscated Rs 1.8 million in cash and over 200 copies of citizenship certificates, cheque books of multiple banks, specimen signatures of various account holders and two diaries from the suspects.

19 die in a bus accident in Arghakhanchi

A total of 19 people have died in a bus accident at Narepani near Sandhikharka-6 of Arghakhanchhi on Wednesday afternoon. The bus (Lu 2 Kha 2148) was heading toward Butwal from Sandhikharka, the district headquarters of Arghakhanchhi, when it fell 500 metres into a gorge.

Eleven passengers among the killed have been identified. Seventeen among those killed died on the spot while the other two died in course of treatment. Thirteen others sustained injuries.

PM Oli to remain in ICU for a few days

Even though Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Centre under the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) has said that PM KP Sharma Oli’s health is stable, his doctor Dr Dibya Singh Shah has said that the PM will remain in the ICU for a few days.

PM Oli was admitted to the centre on Tuesday morning where he was diagnosed with developing appendicitis. He underwent a successful surgery of his appendix the same day.

Nepal Army prepares final list of consultants for fast track project

Nepal Army has published the final list of consultants for selection for the Kathmandu-Nijgadh fast track project. The team lead by Brigadier General and project chief Sharad Lal Shrestha has finalised the list of six companies, out of which one will be selected to become the consultant. Out of the six, most of the companies are Korean. The list of consultants has been made public after the detailed project report was approved.

5 magnitude earthquake shakes central Nepal

An earthquake of magnitude 5 shook the central region on Wednesday evening. The tremor was recorded at 10:08 pm with its epicentre in Sindhupalchok.

According to the National Seismological Center, the tremors were felt in Sindhupalchok, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Kavre, Ramechhap and Dolakha.

SAG volleyball: Nepali women win, men lose against Bangladesh

Nepal women’s volleyball team have begun their campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Bangladesh in the opening fixture of the 13th South Asian Games held in Kathmandu, on Wednesday. Nepal recorded a 25-9, 25-9 and 25-11 victory over Bangladesh at the National Sports Council covered hall on Wednesday.

The men’s team, however, lost to Bangladesh 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 26-24, 15-12).
