Committee fails to name members of transitional justice bodies

Kathmandu, November 24

The government-formed committee to nominate members of two key transitional justice bodies to look into conflict-era cases of enforced disappearance and human rights abuse has yet again failed to complete its task

The committee met for the first time on Sunday after calling on the general public to submit complaints against any one of the candidates short-listed by the committee. The meeting was expected to make some headway into the appointment process.

“We have received to applications related to the appointment,” said Sharmila Karki, spokesperson for the committee. “Ashish Ram Karki has withdrawn his candidacy. A human rights practitioner has filed a complaint saying that the whole nomination process was wrong,” she added.

“We had to look into the complaints. That is why we could not decide on choosing the nominees,” she said. “We will again convene after two days,” said Mishra, who is also a member of the former Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra-led committee formed in March.
