Attempt to rape case filed against Mahara

An attempt to rape case has been filed against former speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara at Kathmandu District Court. The District Attorney’s Office filed the case against Mahara on Thursday.

The investigation team after 20 days of investigation has come to a conclusion that Mahara did attempt to rape a parliament staffer. Mahara, however, has denied all claims. Mahara has also not cooperated in the investigation denying to submit blood samples, refusing to hand over his mobile phone and refusing to take a polygraph test.

If convicted, Mahara could face a jail sentence from five to seven years. Attempt to rape crime carries a jail sentence between 3.5 and 5 years. But government attorneys’ invoked an additional clause of the new penal code seeking additional punishment as Mahara allegedly committed the crime misusing power.

PM discharged from hospital after dialysis

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been discharged from Grande International Hospital on Thursday night after undergoing dialysis. He was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday. While exiting the hospital, the prime minister said that he was fit. During his stay at the hospital, the prime minister underwent dialysis twice. Earlier on October 19, PM Oli was taken to the same hospital for various tests.

SC calls travel ban on Bista unconstitutional

The Supreme Court (SC) has ruled the decision to impose a travel ban on former Maoist combatant Lenin Bista unconstitutional. Bista last year was barred to board a flight from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). The bench of Justice Ananda Mohan Bhattarai and Kumar Regmi on Thursday gave their verdict stating that the act was against the spirit of the Constitution that safeguards people’s freedom of express and movement.

Bista had filed a writ petition at the SC on August 30 against the government’s act of barring him from traveling to Thailand on August 24, 2018, to participate in a workshop. The verdict produced by the judges has asked the authorities concerned not to repeat such actions against him in the coming days.

Nepal to take part in ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup

Nepal will be taking part in the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup due to be held in Bangladesh from on November 12. As per the fixtures made public by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Thursday, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Oman have been pooled in Group ‘A’ and India, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and  Nepal in Group ‘B’. Nepal have replaced the UAE in the tournament.

Nepal will play its first match against India on November 14 and face Hong Kong on November 16. Likewise, Nepal will take on the host Bangladesh in its last group match on November 18.

The top two teams from the two groups will qualify for semi-finals. The final will held on November 23.

World Bank official meet Finance Minister

A team of 21 executive directors of WB groups, met with Finance Minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada on Thursday. According to Finance Minister Dr. Khatiwada, the delegation expressed interest and concern over people’s expectation, service delivery, and capacity building. The team, as he argued, lauded the ministry leadership.

Minister Khatiwada said that the officials reiterated that they would extend the utmost support to Nepal’s socio-economic development. He added that the World Bank has expressed the commitment to assist Nepal in achieving a high economic growth rate to help attain its goal of economic stability.
