Maharajgunj gambling case: District Court extends remand by seven days

Kathmandu, October 31

The Kathmandu District Court has decided to keep the gamblers, who were arrested from a gambling den in Maharajgunj on Sunday, in custody for one more week.

The District Court has extended the remand so that Metropolitan Police Range, Maharajgunj can continue its investigation.

Around 25 people were arrested from a gambling den where the police confiscated Rs 267 million cash and a cheque worth Rs 300,000.

Bala Ram Sapkota aka Bale and Casino King, contractor Pawan Kumar Gupta, industrialist Shrawan Kumar Goyal, Air Dynasty operator Pabitra Kumar Karki, Bikram Gautam and Mukti Lama had filed a habeas corpus petition at the Supreme Court on Sunday. The court, however, quashed their petition.

Their remand has been extended as per the Gambling Act. As per the act, the accused if found guilty will have to serve a jail term to up to one year and will also have to submit a fine up to Rs 10,000.

As per the act, the police will have to submit its investigation report to the government attorney’s office within 25 days.

Nepal Police during Tihar arrested 465 gamblers from across the country confiscating around Rs 330 million.
