Nirmal Purja summits Manaslu, completes climb of 13th 8,000-er in five months

Kathmandu, September 27

Nirmal Purja Magar, a former UK Special Force member, has successfully scaled Mount Manaslu Friday. With this, he has climbed 13 eight-thousand-meter peaks in over five months.

Magar summited Manaslu at 7:50 am on Friday with climbers from his expedition company Elite Himalayan Adventures, base camp officials said.

Mingma Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks, whose company looks after logistics for Magar said that Magar and his team were descending down to base camp. Magar, who plans to summit all 14 peaks above 8,000m in one year, summited Mount Cho Oyu on September 23.

Left on Magar’s list now is Mount Shishapangma in China. However, the Chinese have closed the mountain for this year. There are reports that high-level diplomatic talks are ongoing to open the mountain for Magar’s record-breaking attempt but many believe that the chances of China opening the mountain for Magar are low.

In his first phase, Magar reached the top of Mount Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Kanchenjunga, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu in 31 days.  In his second phase, he then summited Broad Peak, Mount K2, Gasherbrum II, Gasherbrum I and Nanga Parbat in 23 days. In his final phase, Magar has already summited Mount Cho Oyu and Mount Manaslu leaving only Shishapangama.
