Traffic jam plagues Prithivi Highway, as govt starts blacktopping

The departure of people from Kathmandu valley with the onset of the festive season has left the Prithvi Highway quite congested. The ongoing blacktopping of Naubise–Nagdunga road section has added to the woes of the passengers as people had to spend hours on the highway.

Hundreds of passengers travelling via the road have been forced to suffer due to traffic jam. In the next few weeks, the movement of people along the highway will be even more due to the festival of Dashain and Tihar. The blacktopping was started only on Friday.

Inspector Ruk Bahadur Khadka stated that managing the traffic jam has become challenging ‘as the Department of Roads carries out the blacktopping at the peak hour’. The blacktopping starts at 10 am and this is the time when night buses enter the Kathmandu valley. The long hours of traffic jam have been causing massive inconvenience to passengers.

Work hard for economic prosperity, PM tells ministers and secretaries

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has directed all ministers and secretaries to work together to bring economic prosperity and development. At a programme organised at the office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, at Singha Durbar, on the review of the first two months achievement of government’s policy and program of the current fiscal year 2019/20, Prime Minister Oli asked the ministers and secretaries to bring notable progress.

He urged government officials to focus attention on significant programs to contribute to the development, economic progress as well as to give positive result and effect of change in the society. He also drew attention to carry out right works on right time.

Jammu-Kashmir India’s internal matter: Indian Ambassador

Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri has said that the Jammu-Kashmir issue was India’s internal matter and added that other countries should not put their note in the matter.

In the same program, spokesperson of Hindu nationalist group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Arun Kumar said that it had become an issue to other countries due to bad publicity. Both Kumar and Singh added that article 370 needed to be abolished and said that the government of India did the correct thing.

Prabhu Ram Sharma in line to become CoAS

Nepal Army Major General Prabhu Ram Sharma is in line to head the national army. A recent meeting of Council of Ministers had extended his service period by one year, two months and 15 days. Sharma is scheduled to take over from current Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Purna Chandra Thapa as Lieutenant General Gaurav Tandul will retire on May 1 along with Lieutenant General Sharad Giri.

Thapa is retiring of September 9, 2021. It is said that Thapa forwarded Sharma as his successor.

Sherpa appointed Nepali Ambassador to Spain

Dawa Futi Sherpa has been appointed Nepali Ambassador to Spain. The President’s office in a statement on Thursday said that President Bidya Devi Bhandari appointed Sherpa to the post in line to the Article 282 of the constitution. The Parliamentary Hearing Committee (PHC) on June 9 had approved the names of four Nepali ambassadors recommended by the government including Sherpa. Sherpa is the daughter of late Pasang Lhamu Sherpa—the first woman climber from Nepal to ascent Mount Everest.

Govt donates Rs 300,000 to acid victims

A meeting of the Council of Ministers has decided to provide Rs 300,000 each to acid attack victims Jenny Khadka and Muskan Khatun, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gokul Baskota said at a regular press briefing on Thursday. Both are being attended to at Kirtipur Hospital.

4.7 magnitude earthquake hits Gorkha

An earthquake of 4.7-magnitude shook Gorkha and adjoining districts in western Nepal on Thursday evening but authorities said no immediate damage was reported. The epicenter of the quake was located at Gorkha-Lamjung border, according to the National Seismological Centre (NSC). NSC said the quake was an aftershock of the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake.
