Chinese firm interested in Kathmandu sky train project

Kathmandu, April 28

Chinese company Bejing China Air Group Co. Ltd. has written to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, showing its interest in launching a sky train service in Kathmandu.

According to an official at the Prime Minister’s Office, the Chinese company has estimated the cost of construction of the project to be around Rs 22 billion.

“The letter was addressed to PM Oli, who is also the chairperson of Investment Board. We have forwarded the letter to the Board, which is discussing it further,” added an official at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The Chinese company wants to construct a sky train with a capacity of 5,000 people, around Ring Road, which it believes could curb down the Valley’s traffic problems. It also claims that a sky train will be cheaper and better option than metro and mono rails.

The company adds it can finish the construction within two years using its own funds. However, it will only hand it over to the government of Nepal after 28 years.

This letter has confused China Railway’s 25th Bureau Group Company, which is preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of a monorail line to be built along the 27.5 kilometre-long Ring Road in Kathmandu.

Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya, on the behalf of KMC, and Zheu Wing, chief of the Overseas Business Management Department of China Railway’s 25th Bureau Group Co, signed the agreement on December 19.
