Workers protest restaurateurs’ decision to drop service charge

Kathmandu, January 30

Three trade unions of hotel and restaurant workers have jointly protested the decision made by restaurateurs of Kathmandu, Pokhara and Sauraha to remove 10 per cent service charge from the bill of their customers.

Restaurant and Bar Association Nepal (REBAN) had made the decision, citing customers’ dissatisfaction over the provision.

However, the workers objected to the decision and issued a 24 hour ultimatum, demanding the withdrawal.

Three major unions held a meeting in Kathmandu on Wednesday and called on their employers to withdraw the decision. They have argued that the workers were benefitting from the service.

Instead, the restaurant owners could choose to reduce the price of food items they serve to address the customers’ complaints, they suggest.

Mukti Dahal, a trade union leader, says the workers will resort to a stringent protest if their ultimatum is not heeded.
