Police open fire in Kanchanpur again, four injured

Kanchanpur, August 24

Police have again opened fire at protesters demanding justice for a teenager who was raped and murdered in Bhimdutta Nagar last month.

This comes a day after at least 10 people were injured in police firing. Following the incident on Thursday, the local government had clamped a curfew in the area. However, after the Ministry of Home Affairs recalled the CDO and the police chief of the district, protests were expected to subside.

Friday’s incident took place near the district administration office, witnesses said. Assistant CDO Shanler Bista admitted that police opened fire.

The protests erupted after NCP leader Bhim Bahadur Rawal said the Nirmala Pant murder case was being politicised by the Nepali Congress.
