Nirmala Pant Murder: New Kanchanur police chief hints at re-starting probe

Bhimdutta Nagar, August 24

The newly appointed police chief of Kanchanpur says an investigation into the rape and murder of a teenager in Bhimdutta Nagar could be re-started from scratch.

SP Kuber Kadayat, who was sent to the district following violent protests in the wake of Nirmala Pant’s murder last month, said he will launch an investigation into the case after consulting the local people.

“We might have to re-start the investigation from scratch,” he said. “The curfew has been lifted from 5 am today. We have urged local people to help police investigate the case,” said Kadayat, who was brought in to replace SSP Dilli Raj Bista after nine people were injured in police firing on Thursday.

Pant was found murdered on July 26 on a sugarcane field in the city. After two weeks of investigation, police presented a ‘mentally challenged’ man as the main accused in the case. Locals, however, were outraged and accused the police of shielding criminals. The protests turned violent as it entered its fourth day

Following Kadayat’s arrival and the lifting of the curfew, shops, which remained closed for four days, have opened and public transport services have resumed.
