Supreme Court officials vacationing in Europe ‘to exhaust budget’

Kathmandu, July 10

A team of Supreme Court officials led by Justice Ananda Mohan Bhattarai has headed towards Georgia in Europe for a week-long vacation, at the government expense.

The team took off for Georgia a day after the Vice Chancellor of Nepal Sanskrit University Prof Dr Kul Prasad Koirala was barred from visiting Canada for an event stating that he had not obtained a permission from the concerned authority.

However, the court team has also not received any permission from the Ministry of Law, the Ministry of Finance and the Council of Ministers.

High Court Judge Keshav Joshi, the apex court’s Chief Registrar Rajan Bhattarai, Co-Registrar Narayan Panthi, District Judge Arjun Adhikari, and Section Officer Suwarna Prasad Khanal went to Europe for the vacation at the government expense. It has been stated that the visit is organised by the Mediation Council under the Supreme Court to ‘facilitate the exchange of experiences related to mediation’.

But, three persons recommended for the visit— Sarita Shrestha, Geeta Sharma, and Matrika Niraula— are not the member of Council.

According to sources at the Supreme Court, the government had given Rs 5 million for a US trip earlier, which got cancelled later. Hence, to spend the same money, the officials went to Europe.

Meanwhile, an official has claimed that the motive of the visit was wrong, especially after the implementation of the Foreign Visit Management Directive-2018.
