1 LUJENDRA OJHA

Lujendra Ojha, a Phd. student at State of Georgia Institute of Technology is a researcher working in NASA’s mission team to explore Mars planet. He discovered moving water on Mars when he was still undergraduate student in 2010. Only at the age of 25, he has received many awards and honours for his research in the field of planetary science. Being native to Kathmandu, he moved to USA at the age of 15 with his parents. He is also a former heavy metal guitarist in band Gorkha.

2 SUDARSHAN KARKI

On 11th of February 2016, the gravitational waves was detected by the team of scientists of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO). This has proved the 100 years old Einstein’s theories of gravitational waves. The LIGO includes more than thousand scientists from fifteen countries around the world. Among those includes a Nepali scholar Sudarshan Karki from team of LIGO in University of Oregon.

3 GYANU LAMICHHANE

Dr Gyanu Lamichhane, a microbial geneticist, has been working as an associate professor in Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His field of research is infectious diseases particularly tuberculosis, a disease which infects millions of people each year. He discovered the role of L-D transpeptidase enzyme in Mycobacterium tuberculosis which causes tuberculosis disease. He has been awarded with many awards and funding including $ 1.5 million in 2011 and $1 million in 2010 for his research. Also,he has been leading large research teams and own more than 34 publications.

4 BISHAL NATH UPRETI

Professor Bishal Nath Upreti is a noted geologist of Nepal and has been heading the Central Department of Geology at Tribhuvan University. He has made huge scientific contribution with above 44 research papers in his field. He has also been awarded with many national and international awards including CNR Rao Prize for 2015 for his contributions in the investigation of tectonics in the Himalayas and improving public understanding of the geology of Nepal.

Dr. Kumud Dhital is a cardiologist and transplant surgeon at Saint Vincent hospital in Sydney, Australia. He works as an associate professor and senior lecturer in surgery at the University of New South Wales supervising many medical research. Dr. Dhital’s one of the greatest achievements include successful transplantation of dead heart for the first time in the history.

6 RAJU POKHREL

Dr. Raju Pokhrel is environmental scientist who graduated with PhD from Incheon National University in South Korea. After graduation, he is continuing his research career as a research professor in same university. In 2015, he was honoured with Young Scientific Award for his research on atmospheric visibility, air pollution dispersion modelling and indoor air quality management.

7 BHESH BHANDARI

Professor Bhesh Bhandari is a food scientist with University of Queensland Australia. He has been awarded the Bruce Chandler award for his work in co-editing a publication judged to “make the greatest contribution to food science and technology in 2015.” He is one of the noted name among food scientists around the world and certainly no 1 within Nepalese fraternity. Professor Bhandari also invented various food processing technique.

8 SUSHILA MAHARJAN

Dr. Sushila Maharjan, a biologist and a researcher, from Kathmandu has won 2016 Elsevier Foundation Awards for her research. She is the first female Nepali scientist to win the International scientific award. Her works include development of useful chemicals (antibiotics and medicinal chemicals) from the microbes. Recently, she is working in microbes in higher regions of Nepal. 

9 PADAM SIMKHADA

Professor Simkhada is probably the most renowned public health scientist around the world within Nepalese fraternity who is also Associate Dean, Faculty of Education, Health and Community at Liverpool Jon Moores University UK. His research focuses on global public health: particularly on maternal health, health promotion, migration, sex trafficking, reproductive and sexual health including HIV/AIDS. He has been involving on capacity building activities in developing countries particularly on evidence synthesis and systematic reviews. He has published a wide range of peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters related to his research field.

10 SURENDRA ADHIKARI

Dr. Surendra Adhikari is a Nepali scientist who holds a PhD in Geography from University of Calgary, Canada. He made headlines after a NASA team led by him made important discoveries about Earth’s rotation. Agricultural Engineering graduate from Tribhuvan University in 2004 is currently with NASA as a post-doctoral researcher.

11 CHANDRA KANT RAUT

Dr CK Raut is now a Madhesi activist who previously worked for renowned American company Raytheon BBN Technologies as a computer scientist. A gold medallist in BE from Pulchok Engineering Campus who went to pursue degrees in finest institutions in the world. Born in very poor family at Mahadeva Saptari he had extremely difficult childhood financially who later completed PhD from Cambridge University UK and Masters from Tokyo University.
